Heavier fines await traffic violators in Dubai

The interior ministry has adapted an amendment to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Federal Traffic Law that imposes heavier fines for traffic violators, the Khaleej Times reported on Wednesday.

The amendment was said to have been approved by Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.

The adaption comes after an easing in the penalties for minor traffic violations.

Upon the directive of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Ruler of Dubai, cars of drivers with non-dangerous traffic offenses will no longer have to be seized, according to a separate Khaleej Times report.

It said cars currently confiscated by authorities that have served half the imposed confiscation period would reportedly be returned to their owners.

But it also explained that reckless driving and other dangerous violations like speeding, jumping the red light, as well as causing deaths and injuries to others are still punishable by car seizure.
