UAE prepares as cyclone Shaheen nears landfall

The authorities in UAE have maintained a state of readiness as Cyclone Shaheen is likely to bring torrential rains and heavy winds.

Cyclone Shaheen made landfall in Oman on Sunday and was due to move over the UAE on Monday.

At least three people died in Oman on Sunday in a landslide and flash flooding during the onslaught of the typhoon. 

Heavy rains and high winds are expected to hit the UAE’s east coast from Sunday night and torrential rain was likely in Al Ain. 

The storm wind speed is expected to reach 120-140 kilometres per hour.

The UAE’s National Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) on Sunday outlined the measures in place to mitigate the effects of the cyclone.

All schools, universities and colleges which are likely to be impacted have moved temporarily to distance learning.

The forecasters said it will weaken by Monday evening.
