No job for dowry-takers/givers in UAE firm

The Aries Group in the UAE has introduced a policy of not giving employment to anyone who accepts or gives dowry, CEO Sohan Roy said while announcing that the anti-dowry policy — which had been announced on International Women’s Day in March this year — was formally incorporated into its employment contract this week.

Employees of the Sharjah-based Aries Group, who violated this policy, would face legal actions besides having to leave the company, Roy said while noting that the group has established an ‘anti-dowry cell’ to ensure full compliance with the new policy.

Roy highlighted the implementation of the 10-point policy which emphasized the anti-dowry campaign being strictly adhered to among the Group’s employees — including Indians –in business branches across 16 countries. New entrants and employees renewing their existing employment contracts needed to first sign this policy, he said.

Noting that this is the first time in the world an ‘anti-dowry policy’ is being included in an employment contract in an Indian institution, Roy — married to wife Abhini with twin daughters Nirmalya and Nivedya – expressed pride in this decision.

The new policy ensures that any harassment of housewives or their parents will see the employee being terminated from the job. It also includes: Provision for legal and moral support to victims, formation of an anti-dowry cell with majority of its female staff to take decisions within 24 hours, holding awareness sessions, creation of Anti-Dowry Ambassador Award, and a 2023 deadline to achieve the targets.
