Two other suspected cases of maltreatment at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) have surfaced at the height of the outrage over the recent fatal hazing of cadet Darwin Dormitorio.
“Two other fourth class cadets in the PMA are now confined at a military hospital, both incidents sadly are suspected to be maltreatment cases,” CNN Philippines quoted Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson Brig. Gen. Edgard Arevalo as saying in a media briefing.
The report said the freshmen were classmates of Domitorio’s, who died in a hospital last September 17 after having abdominal pain.
The two cadets were brought to the hospital likewise complaining of abdominal pain.
The two were already in stable condition as of press time, Arevalo said.
Arevalo said it was not confirmed yet if similar persons were behind the suspected maltreatment cases.
“There are cases of maltreatment. Hindi naman maltreatment lang dahil namatay; may maltreatment pa rin kahit hindi ganiyan ang kinalabasan. Unauthorized deprivation of food, water, sleep are deemed to be maltreatment,” Arevalo said.
The report added that two PMA officials with “direct responsibility” over the fatal hazing of Dormitorio have been relieved while the investigation is ongoing. (Calvin Caguiwa)
