Filipino surfer, Dutch woman prove race doesn’t matter in love

Many foreigners come to the Philippines and fall in love not just with the beauty of its vast sceneries, but with the locals as well. Others even up in a fairy tale ending with Filipinos.

According to a survey of 14,400 expats in 195 countries conducted by InterNations, one in ten expats moved to be with their partner or for other reasons related to love. And the Philippines landed third on the top ten places where expats fall in love with a local.

However, some Filipinos in multicultural relationships get under the scrutiny of the public. Despite this, many of them and their foreign partners choose to stand up for love.

Recently, a Facebook user shared snaps of a mixed race couple vacationing in Calbayog, Samar.

Filipino surfer Roger Casugay and his girlfriend, Lisa Verweij, a Dutch national, were enjoying their time in the province when their bus ceased to work.

The couple decided to spend the layover in a restaurant, operated by Migs Cano.

This was when Cano noticed how affectionate the two were with each other, narrating her brief encounter with the couple in a Facebook post.

“Costumer namin sila kanina. Ang sweet nila sobra. At ramdam ko na mahal na mahal nila ang isat isa,” she said.

She even encouraged the two to pay no attention to what other people say about them.

“Just be happy and stay in love. You look good together because people who understand see the love,” she added.

Verweij visited her boyfriend Casugay in the Philippines, much to the delight of her family in the Netherlands.

“Safe trip. Big hug for Roger,” Ruud, her mother, said in a post.

The photos have been reported on the Facebook page “Proud Pinoy”, garnering positive reactions from users, with some, sharing their own stories of finding love with foreigners.
