Overseas Filipino workers (OFW) might experience trouble talking to their families back home via Skype as some Internet service providers (ISP) warned of slower Internet connection in the coming weeks.
PLDT and Converge ICT Solutions said their subscribers could experience poor Internet quality in up to six weeks due to the cutting of several undersea cables that link the Philippines to the rest of the world, following storms that recently hit Hong Kong.

“As one of the affected ISPs in the country, PLDT is working closely with our overseas cable partners to speed up repair work. Based on their current plans, our cable partners expect restoration work to be completed in about three weeks,” PLDT said in a statement.
Converge ICT said three of its international submarine cables were affected by the incident.
“It is estimated that it will take four to six weeks to repair all the damaged cables,” Converge ICT said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Globe assured its customers that its service will not be affected by the incident.
“Globe has successfully rerouted its data traffic that goes through the affected cable systems to its other subsea sable capacity routes,” the telco said in a statement.
