Australia issues advisory vs. travel to Mindanao

Australians have been warned against traveling to some areas in Mindanao because of the “very high threat” of kidnapping, terror attacks, and violent clashes.

“We remind Australians of the very high threat of kidnapping in the southern Philippines, especially along the Zamboanga peninsula, in the Sulu Archipelago and in coastal waters between Philippines and Sabah, Malaysia,” the Australian government said in a statement.

Travel to the eastern section of Mindanao should also be reconsidered as the area is considered having a “high level of risk.”

Australians were also reminded that the entire Mindanao island is under martial law and that the military may detain suspects, impose curfews and establish checkpoints.

For those in other areas in the Philippines, Aussies were advised to exercise heightened caution as terror threats are high in the country, including Manila.

“Be alert to possible threats around locations that have a low level of protective security and places that could be terrorist targets. Possible targets include commercial and public places frequented by foreigners.”

The Australian government reminded its citizens that as foreigners, they are not allowed to join rallies and demonstrations should be avoided.

As per the weather, Aussies are told that typhoons may occur until December.
