The November 2016 bar exam results became the talk of the town because of two things—the absence of historical “big three” products in the top 10 and the unusually high passing rate.
But University of the Philippines President Danilo Concepcion rallies behind its new lawyers, saying that the absence of “Isko” topnotchers does not speak for the quality of its law program.
“The business of a law school is to teach law in the grand manner and to make great lawyers, it does not say to make Bar topnotchers,” Philippine Law Register quoted Concepcion as saying.
According to an infographic released by Entrepreneur Philippines, UP is historically branded as one of the top law educators in the country.
Since 1913, UP has produced 48 topnotchers, while Ateneo de Manila University and San Beda College follow with 22 and eight, respectively.
Philippine Law School educated five topnotchers, Far Eastern University and University of Manila have four apiece, while University of Santo Tomas has three.
The 2016 examination results were also deemed by subject matter experts and enthusiasts as unusual because of the high passing rate.
According to Associate Justice Presbitero Velasco, Jr., over half (59.06 percent) of 6,344 graduates who took the bars passed, the “highest passing percentage in the history of bar exams” since 1946, said Velasco.
Furthermore, no schools from Metro Manila made it to the list.
University of San Carlos educated four of the top passers, including Karen Mae Calam, who leads this year’s batch of new lawyers, while other Visayan school Siliman University registered three. An examinee from the University of San Agustin also belong to the cream of the crop.
Mindanao’s Andres Bonifacio College and Ateneo de Davao University have one topnotchers each.
University of Batangas and Northwestern University in Laoag were the only Luzon-based schools that produced topnotchers with one apiece.
