The Senate has set a committee that will look at intelligence and confidential funds and at the efficiency of government bodies in providing intelligence information.
At least P5.48 billion for confidential and intelligence funds is allotted in the 2017 national budget to implement government programs for national defense and security.
The Senate made the announcement as the Philippine National Police chief Ronald Dela Rosa apologized for the recent explosions in Quiapo, Manila which he said are due to “failure of intelligence” on the part of the police.
The blasts has claimed the lives of two people and injured six others last Saturday night, May 6.
Senator Gringo Honasan who chairs the committee on national defense and security has proposed the creation of the said body.
Senator Aquilino Pimentel III already named its members: Honasan, its chairman, and Senators Richard Gordon, Panfilo Lacson, Manny Pacquiao, Bam Aquino, and Francis Pangilinan.
The resolution stated that this will “enable the Senate to oversee the efficiency of concerned government institutions in the production of accurate and timely intelligent information to better deal with the threats to national security.”
