The police said on Monday it has captured one of four suspects in the Quiapo blast that injured at least 14 people last April 28.
The police named the suspect as Abel Macaraya who was arrested for multiple frustrated murder and illegal possession of explosives.
According to Manila Police District chief Joel Coronel, the explosion is Macaraya’s way of taking revenge from what happened to his brother-in-law, a teenager, who was allegedly beaten by a group of siblings called the “Kahulugan brothers.”
“Sa galit ng pamilya, dahil po sa masamang pagtrato na tinanggap ng kanyang kapatid…naisipan po nilang maghiganti,” Coronel said.
(Due to the family’s anger, because of the maltreatment received by his brother, they thought about having revenge.)
Before the explosion, the teenager’s father went to the barangay hall to follow up on the complaint they initially filed. The assailants, however, did not appear, which reportedly prompted him to make threats against them when he found them on Quezon Boulevard.
That same night, a homemade pipe bomb exploded near that area.
The police said a case of violation of R.A. 7610 or the Child Abuse Law was already lodged against the brothers. They are also conducting follow-up operations for the three remaining suspects.
