The Philippines’ National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has summoned Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Deputy Administrator Margaux “Mocha” Uson for allegedly posting and disseminating fake news.
In a report by Manila Bulletin, NBI Deputy Director and spokesperson Ferdinand Lavin said on May 13 that the deputy administrator is being investigated for fake news, and that she is ordered to appear before the bureau on May 18.
He added that under the directive of Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, NBI’s Cyber Crime Division (NBI-CCD) has opened a probe regarding Uson after a complaint was filed against her.
“There was an order of SOJ (Secretary of Justice Guevarra) before for the NBI to investigate fake news. We included her in the investigation regarding the posting of PPEs (personal protective equipment),” Manila Bulletin quoted him as saying.
The investigation comes after Uson’s social media posts in April regarding photos of PPEs, which she said were provided by the Department of Health (DOH). It was later learned that the PPEs were donated by the SM Foundation.
