US President Donald Trump has been acquitted in his US Senate impeachment trial, Reuters reported.
Seventy-three-year-old Trump, the third presidential impeachment trial in US history, was largely acquitted along party lines on two articles of impeachment that were approved by the House of Representatives that is composed of mostly members of the Democratic party.
Senators voted 52-48 to acquit him of abuse of power that stemmed from his request that Ukraine investigates political rival Joe Biden.
Then the legislators voted 53-47 to acquit him of obstruction of Congress by blocking witnesses and documents sought by the House.
Republican Senator Mitt Romney, on the other hand, voted to guilty to the charge of abuse of power but he joined the rest of the Republicans in voting to acquit on the obstruction charge. No Democrat voted to acquit in both charges.
Trump will issue a statement in reaction to the acquittal on Thursday.
