Taal volcano island settlers appeal for in-municipality relocation

Some residents of Taal volcano Island expressed their willingness to relocate following the eruption of Taal volcano last week.
Though the inhabitants are aware of the perils of living in the island, they chose to stay because the sources of their livelihood such as fishing and farming are in the area.
The northern half of Taal Island falls under the jurisdiction of Talisay while the southern portion is governed by San Nicolas both towns of which have settlers at surrounding areas of the crater.
Most of the inhabitants of volcano island enjoy the abundance of aquatic life in Taal lake such as Tilapia, Maliputo, and the endangered Tawilis.
According to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the whole volcano island sits in a Permanent Danger Zone, which means permanent settlement is not permitted.
The residents of Sitio San Isidro, Talisay, Batangas were appealing to the local and national government for an ‘in-municipality’ relocation so that they can continue their livelihood.
“Kami ho’y nahingi ng tulong sa mga nakakataas, kung maaari po ay bigyan kami ng relocation na malapit din po sa aming lugar,” Conchita Villanueva told GMA News.
On January 14, President Rodrigo Duterte approved the recommendation to declare the volcano island a “no man’s land.”
