The family of Jeanelyn Villavende, the Filipina domestic helper who was allegedly killed by her employer in Kuwait, is not inclined to accept blood money.
According to media reports, Abelardo Villavende, Jeanelyn’s father, said they want death sentence to be imposed on the employer instead of blood money that might be offered to them.
Bombo Radyo Koronadal reported that Villavende said it’s disrespectful to accept money from the hands of her daughter’s killer. The family is demanding justice for the death of the 26-year-old domestic helper.
However, a lawmaker is still pushing for blood money. Agusan del Norte 1st District Representative Lawrence Fortun floated the idea of blood money, which is a form of compensation paid to the family of the victim by the offender.
Fortun pointed out that blood money should be demanded aside from swift justice.
“Blood money they understand. The bilateral agreement — that they do not understand. We should communicate with them in ways they can understand,” Fortun said in his statement.
