9,300 stranded passengers at Matnog port now permitted to travel

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) lifted the no-sailing policy on Wednesday afternoon, December 25 at Matnog Port, Sorsogon in Bicol region after interrupting the sailing operation of vessels that affected at least 9,300 passengers.

The sub-station commander of PCG Bicol in Matnog, Chief Petty Officer Nelson Jazo said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) lifted the wind signal at 2 p.m.

Meanwhile, the first ferry to sail was at Allen, Samar before 7 p.m.

“The first trip was delayed because we waited for the vessels that sheltered in some parts of Masbate. The queueing is still a struggle for thousands of strandees. We prioritize buses and light vehicles because they cater to passengers. The tracking services and cargoes are less of a priority,” Jazo said.

He added that majority of the stranded travelers have a chance to stay in the terminal for a couple of days due to the demand in ticketing schedule.

Around 470 trucks, 92 buses, and 471 cars were stranded in the port before the operation has continued.

On the other hand, 2,138 stranded passengers were in the ports of Albay; 134 in Masbate; and 110 in Camarines Sur.
