Hero cop turns self into human sheild to save students from grenade explosion

Here’s something you’d probably only see in the movies.

A police officer, responding to a distress call about an amok with a grenade in hand at a college covered court, was left with no recourse but to grab hold of the explosive, hug it till it blew him to pieces in an attempt to save students.

The heroic but tragic incident happened today inside Initao College in Misamis Oriental at around 11:20 am where, according to a Rappler report,  the amok, pulled the pin as Police Senior Master Sergeant Jason Magno and Master Sergeant Alice Balido tried, in vain, to subdue him.

“Niyakap niya ‘yung granada. Dinapaan niya ang granada para ‘di malakas ang impact (He embraced the grenade. He dropped to cover the grenade so the impact wouldn’t be strong),” Rappler’s Rambo Talabong  quoted Police Captain Princess Velarde, spokesperson of the Misamis Oriental Provincial Police Office, as saying.

Magno, known as an “accommodating” police officer,  was declared dead at the hospital.

The explosion also wounded his colleague and some 10 students and teachers in the area. Police said the injured are in stable condition.
