The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology or Phivolcs yesterday said a total of 1,349 aftershocks have been recorded in three days after a magnitude 6.5 quake hit Cotabato last week.
The town of Tulunan in Cotabato was the epicenter of the magnitude 6.5 quake last Thursday following a magnitude 6.5 quake that hit the town last Tuesday.
Phivolcs told Philstar.com said the Tuesday 6.6 quake recorded 381 aftershocks.
“Due to the magnitude of these events, small- to moderate-sized earthquakes are expected to occur in the epicentral area and may continue for several days to weeks, some of which may be felt,” said a National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council report released yesterday.
Phivolcs said the strong earthquakes that occured in Mindanao are connected.
“Kasi magkakatabi ‘yung fault na identified…So possibly nagkakaroon ng adjustment or gumalaw ‘yung fault dahil nagre-react ‘yung isang fault din,” Phivolcs told CNN Philippines.
