If you’re planning to bring sand especially from the beaches of Sardinia, you might want to abandon that idea.
A French couple is facing one to six years of imprisonment for stealing nearly 40 kilograms of fine white sand and hid it in the boot of their car, according to a report from The Telegraph.
They were stopped by border police during a routine check when they were preparing to board a ferry in Porto Torres on the north of the coast island, bound for Toulon in France.
The sand, taken from a beach near Chia in southern Sardinia, was placed in 14 big plastic bottle containers.
The couple told the police they didn’t know that they were violating the law.
Sardinia is staunchly campaigning for tourists to end the pillaging of their sands.
In July, the Olbia Airport reportedly turned over 10 tons of sand, pebbles, and shells that they found in tourist’s luggage over the years.
Anyone caught faces a fine of €500 to €3,000.
