Death toll in Nepal flooding and landslide ups to 67

Death toll on flooding and landslide in Nepal continues to rise as of Monday with police estimating the numbers to have reached 67.

According to the New York Times report, rescuers are still doing search, rescue, and retrieval operations.

This catastrophe also injured 68, while another 30 people were reported missing.

Torrential rains brought by monsoon began last Thursday night that triggered widespread flooding specifically on the southern plains along the Indian border.

Nearby, Bangladesh officials are also bracing for floodwaters to move downstream.

Photos of the flooding show thigh-high waters and some flood victims wading through it.

According to the National Emergency Operation Center, 16,520 households have been temporarily displaced by this catastrophe. Rescue teams were able to save 3,366 people.

The floods and mudslides blocked nine major highways in Nepal making it difficult for help to come thru.

The weather was not also cooperative in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu.

Beda Nidhi Khanal, the head of the National Emergency Operation Center said bad weather grounded four helicopters based there. The crews onboard it was supposed to carry out rescue operations and supply food to disaster-hit areas.

Only two helicopters based near the border were operating.
