A 7.1-magnitude earthquake rocked Southern California on Friday night (July 6 in the Philippines).
The earthquake again originated in Ridgecrest, Calif., which was the site of a 6.4-magnitude earthquake on Thursday, July 4, the United States Geographical Survey reported.
At least 1,700 aftershocks have been recorded since.
Some Filipinos described the quake as “scary.”
“Another strong #quake in the #LosAngeles area. It was the first time I actually heard our building creak and shake,” California-based journalist Ruben Nepales posted on Facebook.
A 5.4 quake that took place at 4:07 a.m. Friday (3:07 PM, UAE TIME) was by far the strongest aftershock since Thursday’s 6.4 quake that hit the Mojave Desert along the town of Ridgecrest.
Zachary Ross of the California Institute of Technology says the number of aftershocks might be slightly higher than average. He also says a quake of that size could continue producing aftershocks for years, as per a report from Global News California.
