The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has approved the substitution of former National Youth Commission Chairman Ronald Cardema as first nominee of the Duterte Youth party-list.
The said party-list candidate won a seat at the House of Representatives last midterm elections.
“The substitution bid of Ronald Cardema as Duterte Youth nominee has been approved, with one Commissioner dissenting and one abstention,” COMELEC Spokesperson James Jimenez said.
The decision will enable Cardema to serve as a lawmaker in the 18th Congress.
Several groups questioned Cardema’s last minute substitution and his quaifications as nominee for a youth party-list group.
In his previous statements, Cardema said Duterte Youth also caters to young professionals.
Criticisms over his age were also raised because Cardema is already 33 years-old; the age for a youth party-list under the law should be until 30 years-old only.
Cardema is a staunch supporter of the Duterte administration. His stint as NYC chair focused on discouraging young people to join leftist groups.
