In a move to raise awareness on the importance of environmentalism, a former overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Dubai joined a marathon in Cebu while wearing a costume made of recycled garbage.
According to OFW Jonathan Dungog, he was inspired to wear the costume made of garbage this year following the suggestion of one of the organizers of the marathon.
Dungog also added that he has been an advocate of environmentalism since he moved to Cebu after he worked in Dubai for five years.
“I wanted to move in an area close to the ocean,” the former OFW told Cebu Daily News Digital.
Dungog said that his goal is to raise awareness on taking care of the environment particularly on recycling.
It is not the first time that Dungog joined the Cebu Marathon while wearing a costume. Over the past six years, Dungog has been joining the event wearing notable costumes such as costumes made of brooms, feathers, and abaca, among others.
In 2016, the former OFW wore an 18-kilogram costume made of abaca and feathers and ran in the marathon despite having an asthma.
The marathon is a part of the celebration of Cebu City’s Sinulog Festival to give thanks to Señor Sto. Niño.
“I will run every year with costume as my way of giving thanks to the Sto. Niño for a fruitful year,” Dungog said.
