A 38-year-old man held a 5-year old boy hostage on Monday, December 17, after running amok in Sta. Mesa, Manila due to the death of his overseas Filipino worker (OFW) brother.
According to suspect Dominador Abrinno, his brother died during a police operation in Clark, Pampanga, reported The Manila Times. The reason behind the death of his brother was not disclosed.
He said the incident, on top of other personal problems, led him to steal a gun from a PNR security guard which he used to hold the boy hostage near the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP).
Six people sustained injuries in the shooting incident between the suspect and the authorities. The victims were brought to the Ospital ng Sampaloc.
Abrinno eventually surrendered around 10:57 a.m. He denied being under the influence of drugs. However, he admitted that he has been using narcotics before.
“‘Di ko naisip mang-hostage. Nawala sa isipan ko anong ginawa ko. Halo halo ang problema ko, ma’am,” Abrinno said.
