Pilot misses destination after falling asleep on flight

Aviation authorities in Australia are investigating the case of the pilot who missed his destination by more than 40 kilometers after falling asleep during flight.

According to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), the pilot of Piper PA-31 aircraft, who was the only person on board the plane, fell asleep while travelling from Devonport to King Island in Tasmania, Australia, reported Evening Standard.

When the pilot woke up, he was already 46 kilometers away from his destination in King Island. He made a U-turn midair and was able to land safely.

ATSB said it will investigate the incident which has been classified as ‘serious’ case.

“As part of the investigation, the ATSB will interview the pilot and review operational procedures,” ATSB said.

“A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation,” it added.
