Scavenger tries to swim from Cebu to Bohol to visit parents’ graves

The 47-year-old Ceferino Angco was rescued from the waters in Talisay City on Sunday morning, October 28, after trying to visit his parents’ graves in Carmen, Bohol.

He was seen hanging on to a floating styrofoam and was rescued out from the waters by the members of the Bantay Dagat Commission.

Working as a scavenger in Cebu, Angco did not have enough money to afford the boat fare to Bohol. Determined to go home, he decided to cross the water on Saturday night, October 27, but he was unable to go far.

“Mauwaw man ko mangayog pamplite gyud (I’m too shy to ask for fare money),” said Ceferino when asked why he decided to swim his way to Bohol, reported Inquirer.

He started swimming in the vicinity of Malacañang sa Sugbo in Cebu City at around 11 p.m. on Saturday but he easily got tired. Ceferino hanged on to a piece of styrofoam which he found floating near his area.

For nine hours, he remained on the waters of Talisay City using a styrofoam before he was rescued at around 8 a.m. on Sunday, said Felix Angco, a Bantay Dagat personnel, who happens to have the same family name as Ceferino although they are not related.

Talisay City Councilor Antonio Bacaltos Jr. paid for Ceferino’s boat fare to his trip to Carmen, Bohol.
