The British tourist charged with over $45,000 (Dhs165,284 approx.) fines for overspeeding at Sheikh Zayed National Road is stranded in Dubai after refusing to pay the fine and surrendering his passport.
Farah Hashi is from Newport, South Wales; he is a father of one and has one leg shorter than the other, reported The Sun.
On July 31, Hashi was caught by speed cameras driving a rented Lamborghini Huracan with a speed of up to 230kph between the hours of 2:30 to 6:00 am.
The firm who rented out the car to him confiscated his passport until he pays the fine. It is also asking for the United Kingdom’s Embassy to mediate in the legal dispute.
The said Lamborghini is parked outside of Five Palm Jumeirah Hotel and Resort, although Hashi has not resurfaced since the news was picked up by international media.
The family of the tourist claims that he did not know about the speeding limits in Dubai. However, the Saeed Ali Rent-a-car dealership said they did not fail to inform him of the law. The rental company said that they are a small business and the case is hurting them.
Under the UAE law, it is the responsibility of the rental company to pay instead of the driver who incurred the fines.
