Metro Manila subway targets to operate before Duterte’s term ends

The Department of Transportation announced that the Mega Manila Subway project will break ground before 2019 and promised to make it operational before President Duterte’s term ends in 2022.

The P51.3 billion project aims to make three stations operational by 2020: Mindanao Avenue-Quirino Highway, Tandang Sora, and North Avenue.

DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade said that once completed, the Japan-funded subway will have 14 stations including a station near Ninoy Aquino International Airport, reported ABS-CBN.

Meanwhile, Tugade said that the construction of the Mindanao railway project will be delayed due to changes he introduced. He plans for the Mindanao express to be double-track, electric-powered and have a standard gauge.

The subway is expected to cater 370,000 passengers per day in its opening year.

Finance secretary Carlos Dominguez called the subway the “biggest single project” under the Dutertenomics Program.
