Engineer accused of harassing co-worker in Dubai gets cleared of charges

An engineer who was accused of sexual harassment by his Asian co-worker got acquitted from the charges filed against him.

A 39-year-old Syrian engineer faced such charges when he reportedly slapped a Filipina co-worker last March, reported Gulf News.

The report stated that the Filipina bursted into tears after the incident and told her colleague about it.

The Filipina’s colleague reported the incident to the police, and the suspect was immediately apprehended by the authorities.

Medical records also showed that the Filipina had red marks on her behind after the incident.

However, the Dubai Court of First Instance recently cleared the Syrian suspect of such charges, citing lack of corroborated evidence.

The defendant pleaded guilty to the charges but his lawyer presented a defense witness who testified that she did not see the Syrian engineer slapping the complainant.

The defendant’s lawyer said that his client did not do what was being accused to him saying that the Syrian engineer only bumped into the Filipina by mistake.

The lawyer also asked the court to refer the case to the Dubai Misdemeanours Court, saying it was “a minor assault case and not a case of molestation”.

The primary ruling is subject to appeal within 15 days.
