Metro Manila crime rate down by 18%

Metro Manila’s crime rate has decreased by 17.96% in 2017, said the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO).

Crimes involving murder, homicide, physical injuries, rape, robbery, theft, carnapping, and motorcycle theft had a substantial decrease. From 1,976 recorded number of murder in 2016, it reduced to 1,514 in 2017.

Homicide incidents decreased from 577 to 423; physical injuries from 4,830 to 4,462; rape 1,098 to 906; robbery 3,603 to 3,025, theft 8,059 to 6,454; carnapping 317 to 162; and motorcycle theft from 1,221 to 842.

According to NCRPO Chief Oscar Albayalde, this positive outcome is the fruit of their intensified programs involving “Project Double Barrel Alpha”, “Project Double Barrel Reloaded”, and the enactment of their “Enhanced Managing Police Operations”.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque lauded the effort of the police to reduce the crime rate in the metro.

“This is of course as a result of our renewed effort… against all forms of criminality,” said Roque in a press conference in Malacañang last Monday, January 15.

Despite the positive result in lessening the crime rate in the region, the NCRPO chief said that he won’t allow his personnels to be complacent. He also reminded the public that the organization has no place for ‘bad eggs’ or corrupt policemen.

Albayalde promised that they will continue to strengthen organization’s disciplinary trainings and internal cleansing program among its personnels.
