Filipino students nab awards at international robotics competition

Filipino students have bested other competitors coming from different parts of the world as they nabbed major awards in this year’s FIRA RoboWorld Cup held in Kaohshing, Taiwan from August 23 to 27.

Samuel Taberno from Kapt. Eddie T. Reyes Integrated School and Madelle Diez, Philip Leonard Diez, John David Golenia, Pierre Alan Romir Pioquid, and Aron Sean Michael Pioquid from Sen. Renato Compañero Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School bagged gold medals in the Cliffhanger category.

In that category, the students built a robot that defeated an opponent out of the Dohyo or Cliffhanger ring.

The students also nabbed silver medals in the Mission Impossible category.

The category required the team to create an 8.5” x 11” robot using limited materials like BBQ sticks, styrofoam, glue sticks, micro-controllers, popsicle sticks, DC motors, distance, paper cups, and ultrasonic sensors. They have to make the robot floating while following a line path placed underwater.

“We didn’t expect to win especially when we learned what countries we were competing against. When we arrived [at the competition], we were intimidated and shocked with the other competitors’ robots, because ours only looked like a metal that had a motor and batteries,” GMA News has quoted Pioquid.
