A university student was assaulted in Istanbul for wearing shorts during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.
Asena Melisa Saglam was traveling on a bus when a man seated behind her slapped her in the face.
Saglam tried to chase after the man, but he grabbed her and flung her to the back of the bus before getting off.
The Turkish man reportedly harassed Saglam verbally throughout the bus ride for wearing shorts during Ramadan.
The man was detained. Upon questioning by police, he said the woman and her shorts “provoked” him.
When the man was released after the interrogation, women’s rights activists went in an uproar.
“The release of the attacker is a threat to all women,” the women’s rights organization “We Will Stop Femicide Platform” wrote on Twitter.
Following the uproar, an order to re-arrest the man was given.
There is no word yet from officials if the man has been re-arrested.
A man named Abdullah Cakiroglu who kicked a Turkish woman wearing shorts last year in is currently on trial and will face nine years in prison if convicted.
