Filipino worker falls while dismantling roller coaster in HK

A 27-year-old Filipino worker died while helping to dismantle a roller coaster on the Central Habourfront in Hong Kong on Wednesday.

The man, who had a work visa, fell from a six-meter high working platform that collapsed at 10am, Apple Daily quoted the police as saying.

The roller coaster was one of the rides at the AIA Great European Carnival, a two-month event that ended on Sunday, the report said.
The carnival suspended all work after the accident and said it would offer help to the worker’s family.

The Labor Department is investigating. Chow Luen-Kiu, president of the Hong Kong Construction Industry Employees General Union, said in local newspapers that metal frames must be assembled and disassembled by qualified workers under the guidelines of an experienced technician, said the news portal.

A spokesman from the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims reportedly said workers must wear safety belts when working on high platforms.
