UAE orders arrest of 25 individuals over misleading war-related content online

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have ordered the arrest of 25 individuals of different nationalities for allegedly spreading misleading and fabricated content online that could harm national security and defence efforts.

The order was issued by UAE Attorney-General Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, who directed that the suspects be referred to an expedited trial.

According to authorities, the arrests came after intensified monitoring of digital platforms to curb the spread of false information, manipulated videos and artificial intelligence-generated content linked to the ongoing regional tensions.

Investigators said the accused were divided into three groups, each involved in different types of online activity.

First group:
This group allegedly shared real video clips showing missile interceptions and other incidents in the country’s airspace. Authorities said they added commentary and sound effects to suggest active attacks, which could create panic and reveal sensitive defence capabilities.

Second group:
The second group was accused of publishing AI-generated or manipulated videos, including clips from incidents outside the UAE falsely presented as local events. Some videos reportedly showed fake explosions or missile strikes designed to mislead the public.

Third group:
The third group allegedly shared content praising a hostile country and promoting its political and military leadership, portraying acts of military aggression as achievements.

The Public Prosecution has begun investigations and ordered the preventive detention of the suspects while inquiries continue.

The Attorney-General warned that spreading misleading content online that threatens public security or exposes defence operations is a serious criminal offence.

Authorities stressed that anyone proven to be involved in such activities will face legal penalties under UAE law, especially during a period of heightened regional tensions.

Officials also reminded the public to rely only on official sources for accurate information and avoid sharing unverified content online.
