KNOW THE LAW: AED 1,000 fine for hard shoulder driving in Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi Police have warned drivers who go for hard shoulder driving that they will face a fine of AED 1,000 ($272) and six points on their licence.

This came after police released a video that highlighted the dangers of reckless driving as a motorist smashed into the back of a stationary vehicle on a hard shoulder.

The footage showed the driver cutting across two lanes to enter the hard shoulder, which is designated for emergency vehicles and those which have broken down, without indicating before hitting the car. The motorist who broke the rule hit the car with force resulting in the mishap.

The Police regularly release accident footage on social media to drive home the potential consequences of failing to abide by traffic laws and this it said more than 700 new high-tech speed cameras would be installed on the roads of the capital in an effort to strengthen safety.

Maj Muhammad Abdullah Al Zaabi, head of Abu Dhabi Police’s Traffic Technical Systems section, said that multi-tracking radars with high-resolution imagery will be used to cover various lanes which will be equipped with weather-monitoring technology to improve safety on the roads. (AW)
