No COVID-19 ‘surge’ yet in PH despite rising numbers of cases – DOH

The Philippines has witnessed rising numbers of COVID-19 cases in the past few weeks, and authorities have pinpointed that this is due to the presence of coronavirus variants in the country.

Department of Health Spokesperson Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire stressed that despite the increase in numbers, they have yet to consider this as a ‘surge’.

“Kasi ang tinitignan natin kapag we use surge, we relate it to the healthcare capacity of the country. For example sa NCR, nasa moderate risk pa lang ‘yung mga gamit natin, so we cannot really classify this as a surge,” explained Vergeire in an interview with GMA News.

This, after OCTA Research recommended two weeks of lockdown to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 variants, specifically Delta that was first detected in India.

However, Vergeire clarified that the current spread levels of COVID-19 doesn’t warrant the need for lockdowns as of yet.

“Although, we’re sounding the alarm already, base sa objective discussion and analysis, nakikita natin na wala pa tayo doon sa level na kailangan mag lockdown,” said Vergeire.
