WHO: COVID-19 situation in India beyond ‘heartbreaking’

The World Health Organization (WHO) sounded the alarm on India’s record-breaking coronavirus wave of cases and deaths.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the organization is rushing to address the crisis in the South Asian country.

“The situation in India is beyond heartbreaking,” Ghebreyesus said.

India is currently battling a catastrophic coronavirus wave that has overwhelmed hospitals, with crematoriums working more than their full capacity.

The surge of new COVID-19 cases also pushed some Indians to post and beg for oxygen tanks and available hospital beds.

“WHO is doing everything we can, providing critical equipment and supplies,” Tedros said.

He said they will also sending “thousands of oxygen concentrators, prefabricated mobile field hospitals and laboratory supplies”.

The country with a population of 1.3 billion has become the latest hotspot of coronavirus infections.

The US and Britain rushed ventilators and vaccine materials to help India. Other countries also pledged support.

The United States remains the worst-affected country, with some 572,200 deaths and over 32 million infections, followed by Brazil and Mexico.

India ranks fourth but it is currently driving the new number of COVID-19 cases.
