Man mistakenly declared dead, ‘comes back to life’ in morgue

A man who was declared dead suddenly woke up while he was in the embalming table.

Peter Kigen, 32, ended up in a morgue in Kenya after he fainted and was rushed to the hospital on November 24.

“Kigen had been suffering from a stomach ailment which forced us to rush him to hospital,” his uncle told Citizen TV the day after.

Kigen’s younger brother Kevin Kipkurui said a doctor attended to Kigen on November 26. After filling up the necessary information on Kigen, a nurse approached Kevin and told him that his brother already died.

“The nurse later handed me a document to take to the mortuary attendant before my brother’s body was moved to the morgue,” Kevin said.

However, after a few hours, Kigen wailed in pain as they made an incision on his right leg to put formalin.

Now Kigen is already recovering in the hospital but his family mulls possible actions on the hospital’s negligence.

“I cannot believe what just happened. How did they establish that I was dead?” Kigen said.

“I did not even know where I was when I regained consciousness, but I thank God for sparing my life,” he added.

The hospital has yet to issue its official statement on the case. However, a doctor from the hospital told local media reports that the family brought the victim to the hospital declaring him dead. The doctor also said that the family was the one who insisted moving Kigen’s body to the morgue.
