Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah conducts gender, development forum

The Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Jeddah held a seminar about gender and development for its staff last August 30.

The Gender and Development (GAD) forum covered three topics, mainly: The Magna Carta of Women and Basic Gender concepts by Consul and Jeddah PCG GAD Focal Point Mary Jennifer Dingal, The Phenomenon of Human Trafficking by Legal Officer and Attaché Chares Marie Torres-Elacion, and Psychological First Aid and Stress Debriefing by Social Welfare Attache Annabel. Oidem.

The first lecture highlighted the accomplishments of the Philippines in advocating women’s rights since the signing into law of the Republic Act 9710 or the Magna Carta of Women (MCW) in August 2009. The speaker, Consul Dingal talked about how a correct understanding of basic gender concepts can help in women empowerment.

Legal Officer and Attache Torres-Elacion, meanwhile, explained human trafficking as a form modern-day slavery—making victims out of mostly women and children. Human trafficking is one of the major challenges faced by the world, but Torres-Elacion gave tips on how people can help detect and stop it.

The third forum put a focus on Psychological First Aid (PFA) and stress management. The speaker, Social Welfare Attache Oidem explained how PFA works and how the personnel of PCG can apply it to themselves as well as other people to cope with a stressful environment.
