The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken a step toward considering casinos by setting up the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA). This new body is tasked with creating rules for national lotteries and gaming.
Leading the GCGRA is Kevin Mullally, a seasoned expert in gaming regulations. Abu Dhabi will oversee its operations, following the country’s federal structure. However, each of the seven emirates will have a say on whether to allow gambling.
Historically, UAE has prohibited gambling, but recent news suggests a change in policy. This shift gained traction after Wynn Resorts announced plans to open a casino in Ras Al Khaimah.
While Dubai already has the famous Caesars Palace, it lacks a casino.
According to a statement from WAM, the GCGRA’s goal is to create a responsible and well-regulated gaming environment, enforcing strict standards.
The GCGRA will coordinate regulations, handle national licensing, and promote responsible commercial gaming to boost the UAE’s tourism sector.
The move has potential implications for the gaming industry, and it remains to be seen how individual emirates will decide on the future of gambling within their borders.
