Ngan Anh Le Au, Vietnam’s representative to the 47th Miss Intercontinental created an online buzz after she allegedly copied Catriona Gray’s Mayon Volcano-inspired dress and signature “lava walk”.
Many Filipino pageant fans noticed that Miss Vietnam’s performance during the Miss Intercontinental evening gown competition was very similar to Gray’s performance during the Miss Universe pageant held last month.
While Miss Vietnam earned applause during the competition, pageant fans said that Miss Vietnam copied Gray from the gown and walk to the turn and the way she combed her hair with her hand.
Because of this, many fans were not pleased and said that Miss Vietnam has no originality calling her a “copycat”. They said that beauty queens who join international pageants should present who they truly are instead of just copying someone else.
However, there were still some who defended Miss Vietnam and said that she was just taking inspiration from Gray.
Nevertheless, Miss Vietnam was named as one of the Top 6 finalists and finished as a fourth runner-up. She also received the People’s Choice Award.
According to her profile page on the Miss Intercontinental website, Miss Vietnam is a 23-year-old student who is taking a Master program of Events International Management. She lives in Ho Chi Minh and has a “strong passion for updating fashion trends and traveling around the world”.
She also said that Miss Intercontinental is the first major international beauty pageant that she joined.
The 47th Miss Intercontinental was held on January 26 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. Karen Gallman was hailed as the winner earning the Philippines its first Miss Intercontinental crown.
