Fashion Czar of Asia, Pitoy Moreno, passes away at 87

Pitoy Moreno, the famed Filipino fashion designer who was given the title “The Fashion Czar of Asia,” passed away on Monday, January 15.

Born in 1930, the designer was 87 years old at the time of his death.

Multiple sources have confirmed that Moreno died in Manila Doctors Hospital due to cardiac arrest at around 2:48 p.m.

Moreno was most known for popularizing the “Maria Clara” gowns which were named after Jose Rizal’s character in “Noli Me Tangere.”

He graduated from the University of the Philippines Diliman with a degree in fine arts.

Moreno started establishing his career in the 60’s by presenting fashion shows all over the world.

His creations have been worn by Philippine elites, first ladies, and European royal family members.

In 2009, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo gave Moreno the National Artist for Fashion Design distinction.

However, this caused protest from other National Artist saying that Fashion Design is not an accepted art form yet, and his craft was simply dressmaking.

His creations have been featured in international magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.
