The world’s longest sea-bridge that crosses Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China is set to be launched Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the middle of Beijing’s strict regulations on its semi-autonomous territories.
The 55-kilometer-long bridge located in Lingdingyang waters of the Pearl River Estuary will be officiated by Chinese President Xi Jinping in an opening ceremony in the city of Zhuhai.
The sea bridge will be open to traffic on Wednesday, Oct. 24, a day after the opening ceremony.
This is the second major infrastructure project connecting Hong Kong to mainland China after a high-speed rail link was opened on September.
The building started in 2009 and suffered from delays, budget overturns, corruption prosecutions, and deaths of construction workers.
The project earned mixed response as supporters see it as a way to boost business and minimize travel time, while others see it as politically-driven agenda.
