The Philippine Consulate in Toronto is still checking if any Filipino was hurt after a van rammed onto the sidewalk of Yonge Street and Finch Avenue in Northern Toronto.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the Consulate, as of the moment, could only gather information from fellow Filipinos in the area, as Toronto authorities have yet to release the names of those killed or injured.
Likewise, the Philippine Embassy has not yet received any reports of Filipinos hurt in the said incident.
“The Philippine Embassy in Ottawa said it has not received any report of Filipinos among the dead or injured and that the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto is still checking with authorities and members of the 270,000-strong Filipino Community,” the DFA said in a statement.
Toronto has the highest concentration of Filipinos in Canada. There are about 270,000 Filipinos living and working in the city.
On Monday, April 23, Alek Minassian drove his van onto the sidewalk of the aforementioned streets in Toronto.
The driver was apprehended at the scene.
The incident took the life of at least ten people while multiple people sustained injuries.
