Ex-janitor’s son tops mechanical engineering licensure exam

Working as a janitor at a private school, Nelson Corbita worked tirelessly to provide for the needs of his family.

In 2013, he decided to retire early and use his retirement pay for his children’s education while his wife continued to sell snacks like banana cue and ice candies to put a roof over their heads.

Years later, all his sacrifices paid off as his youngest son, Jay Nelson, tops the mechanical engineering licensure examinations.

With a cumulative rating of 92. 20 percent, Jay Nelson, who graduated summa cum laude at Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro City, is the second mechanical engineering graduate from the university to top the board exam.

He said it was his brothers, both licensed mechanical engineers, who inspired him to become an engineer himself.

“Aside from the free books I can get from them as references, they could also give me pieces of advice in one way or another as I take my course,” he said in an interview posted in his school’s website.

According to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), only 3,517 out of 5,098 takers passed the exam, earning a national passing rate of 68.98 percent.
