The Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed that former Negros Oriental Representative and fugitive Arnie Teves has been released from his house arrest in Timor Leste.
DOJ spokesperson Assistant Secretary Mico Clavano told reporters that the Justice Department received notification of Teves’ release.
“Per TL laws, a fugitive can only be detained/restricted for a maximum of 90 days. Fugitive Teves is able to leave his house but is being monitored by security forces. Land, sea, and air border authorities have been notified to ensure that Teves stays within Dili only,” said Clavano.
The DOJ added that Teves needs to present in all court proceedings and his travel documents are with Timor Leste authorities.
“He also has to be presented to court every two days, while waiting for the decision of the Court of Appeal, which is expected to come out by next week. All of Teves’ documents are also in the possession of the security forces,” he said.
Clavano added that they expect more decisions to be out on Teves’ case soon.
“Rest assured, we anticipate that the legal proceedings which were supposed to have been concluded within the 90-day period will finally come to a close and he will be back in the Philippines to face the charges,” said the DOJ official.
