Man posed as rich Emirati to embezzle Dh700,000 from woman he met online

An illegal resident in the UAE will be jailed for 18 months and pay a fine worth Dh500,000 for posing as a rich Emirati and blackmailing a woman he met online.

The Abu Dhabi Court of Cassation heard the case of an Arab man who created a fake account on Twitter, claiming he is a wealthy Emirati. He used the same social media account to lure his victim, according to a report of Emarat Al Youm.

The online friendship of the man and his victim (identity withheld) turned into a relationship, but suddenly, the suspect started demanding money and explicit photos from the victim after he promised her marriage.

The woman found out that the man was lying to him and decided to cut ties with him. With that, he threatened to release her explicit photos online if she would discontinue sending him money.

The blackmailing went on due to her fear that it would be a scandal.

The amount of money she had sent to the Arab man reached Dh700,000 before she decided to report the matter to police.

The Arab man will be deported after serving his jail term.
