Northern Luzon on alert as ‘Carina’ hits land

TUGUEGARAO CITY: The Cagayan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRC) has braced for the expected landfall of Tropical Storm Carina (Nida) Sunday afternoon, media reports said.

Other areas that are facing Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal Number 2 include Isabela, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Apayao, Mt. Province, Ifugao, Kalinga and Abra, reported Sun Star.

Areas under TCWS No. 1 are Batanes Group of Islands, Benguet, La Union, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, and Aurora, the report said.

The PDRRMC has reportedly called the meeting to make necessary preparations to avert the loss of lives and properties in times of calamities.

Rogelio Sending, provincial information officer, reportedly said the local chief executive has imposed a ‘no fishing and no sailing’ in the coastal towns and the provincial social welfare and development office has proportioned relief goods in the coastal towns.

Sending was quoted as saying that relief packs were also given to the fishermen who were prohibited to go on fishing to ensure their safety.

Rescue units form the Philippine Army, Police Provincial Office, Philippine Red Cross, Bureau of Fire Protection and other rescue groups are on standby mode and are ready to be deployed in flood-prone areas of the province, reported Sun Star.
The PDRRMC is closely monitoring the movement of the typhoon and assures Cagayanos that the rescue units of Cagayan are ready for round-the-clock disaster response efforts, the report pointed out.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, the storm was located at 160 kilometers (km) southeast of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, said the news portal.

Carina’s winds intensified further from 85 kilometers per hour (kph) to 95 kph and its gustiness reached from 100 kph to 120 kph,it said,adding that the tropical storm is forecast to move northwest at 20 kph and will exit Ilocos Norte late Sunday.
