‘Weight-loss’ coffee brand pulled from shelves in Dubai

Authorities have banned a weight-loss brand of coffee in Dubai for endangering the public’s health and safety.

Dubai Municipality alerted residents that Idol Slim Coffee is no longer available in the market, and that the product’s import, sale and circulation has been banned.

According to local reports, it contained Sibutramine, a substance that is banned in the international market since 2010 after studies showed that it can pose cardiovascular risks.
According to the US Food and Drug Administration, the product was globally launched in November 1997 and was used for weight loss and the maintenance of weight loss in patients with a high body mass index (BMI).
