Manila, private firms continue clean-up drive to help restore Pasig River

The city government of Manila has intensified its waste collection efforts in cooperation with the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) and private firms.

The new program aims to incentivised or pay in exchange of plastic wastes in order to help in the continuing clean-up efforts in Pasig River.

Dubbed as ‘Kolek, Kilo, Kita para Walastik na Maynila’ encourages residents to collect light plastic wastes and deliver it to Unilever Philippines.

Every kilo of plastic of plastic products is worth Php10.

“To make sure that plastics will not end up in the oceans and landfills instead will be converted into fuel, residents can also benefit from the product incentives. So we are appealing to everyone to support this program,” the company said to Philippine News Agency.

All these waste collection efforts hope to help in cleaning up the Pasig River, which won the 1st Asia Riverprize, the world’s foremost award in river basin management.

The recognition took notice of the Pasig River rehabilitation. The award giving body also lauded the community efforts launched to save the once called ‘dying river’.

“Critical to the success of this story is to bring the communities of about 18 thousand people to decent houses and transforming these communities and their lives into environmentally responsible citizens is an amazingly outstanding achievement,” the Asia Riverprize awards chairman said.
