Banking customers urged to update Emirates ID details

The UAE Central Bank renewed its call for banking customers to update their Emirates ID details to avoid getting their debit and credit cards suspended.

The order to update the details seeks to “have standardised and current identity documentation for their customers”, as per Waheed Abbas’ report on Khaleej Times.

A Bank of Sharjah spokesperson said that the order covers updating of Emirates ID regardless of the date of expiration of the ID.

“On February 25, Bank of Sharjah received clarification from the UAE Banks’ Federation regarding the CBUAE circular 265/2018 regarding of updating customer records with UAE ID numbers. The clarification stated that the scope of the mandate is limited to EID details and that the validity date of expired Emirates ID cards is not required,” the spokesperson said.

Chief operating officer at RAKBank Geoff Stecyk said that their bank has implemented several measures to inform their customers of the necessity to update their details. Emirates Islamic Bank, on the other hand, allows its customers to update their details through ATMs, website, e-mail, or calls.

In a circular released by the UAE Central Bank, customers who would not be able to update their bank records by February 28, 2019 would not be able to use their debit and credit cards, reported The National.

The suspension covers ATM transactions and other direct debit and credit transactions, among others.

The circular, however, states that the suspension is only temporary and will be revoked once the customer updates his/her bank records. Customers with suspended debit or credit cards are also allowed to make over-the-counter transactions in banks.

After three months of failing to comply following the deadline, the card will be completely suspended.
